杜浩锋

我是北京大学新结构经济学研究院（INSE）的经济学博士生，导师是江深哲长聘副教授和林毅夫教授。我于2021年在南京大学商学院（NUBS）获得经济学学士学位。研究方向包括发展经济学、宏观经济学。研究发表于《经济研究》等学术期刊，研究报告获国家领导人肯定性批示，曾获香樟经济学优秀论文奖等奖项，担任《经济研究》等期刊匿名审稿人。

• Transforming Luxuries into Necessities: How Income Inequality Affects Growth?

  • Abstract: Many economists have long observed that major innovations often begin as luxuries for the rich and eventually diffuse to become necessities for the poor. This paper provides the first systematic evidence of this process using comprehensive U.S. micro-level data and develops a unified framework linking income inequality, firm innovation, and economic growth. We document three key facts: (i) poor consumers’ expenditure shares on products rise over time; (ii) firms serving richer consumers innovate more; and (iii) firm entry accompanies the diffusion of products across the income distribution. We build a dynamic general equilibrium model with hierarchical consumption and firm dynamics to account for these patterns. The model shows that rising inequality distorts innovation and increases the concentration of innovative activity—a pattern consistent with the data. Quantifying the model using U.S. retail scanner data and patent records, we find that the observed rise in income inequality between the 1970s and the 2010s can almost fully account for the decline in per-capita GDP growth over the same period.
